Ohio Lottery participants are experiencing a remarkable surge of fortune at a Giant Eagle supermarket located in the northeastern region of the Buckeye State. 

This week, the Ohio Lottery announced that a visit to the grocery store for one fortunate lottery player transformed into a life-changing event. An individual, preferring to stay unnamed, bought a $50 VIP Millions scratch-off and won the game’s highest prize of $1,000,000. 

Lottery officials stated that the winner chose the lump sum cash option of $500,000 rather than the complete $1 million distributed over 25 years in annual payments of $40,000. Following federal and state taxes, the unexpected gain totaled around $360,000. 

The winning ticket was bought at the Giant Eagle supermarket located at 2032 E. Lincoln Way in Massillon. The Giant Eagle store earned a $10,000 commission for selling the victorious VIP Millions ticket. 

Giant Eagle Provides Huge Lottery Victories 

This week’s Ohio Lottery VIP Millions victory marked the third significant lottery win in recent months at that same Giant Eagle location. 

Just a week prior, the Ohio Lottery announced that a player who bought a $5 Monopoly Bonus Spectacular 25x scratch ticket won the grand prize of $150,000. The fortunate ticket was bought at the Giant Eagle located at 2032 E. Lincoln Way in Massillon. 

The fortunate customer, who preferred to stay unnamed, obtained around $108,000 after taxes at both the federal and state levels. The Giant Eagle earned a $1,500 sales incentive. 

The two July jackpots at Giant Eagle Massillon occurred just over three months after a $50 VIP Millions scratch-off ticket from the grocery store won $20,000. After taxes, the winner's net earnings amounted to about $14,400.

Superstition at Work 

Although the specific chances of winning each prize differ and ultimately rely on the quantity of tickets purchased and the count of prizes redeemed, participants at the Massillon Giant Eagle have experienced remarkable luck in 2025. 

When lottery sellers have a substantial win, they often experience a boost in sales, as many players hold superstitions that a retailer's machine is lucky, similar to slot players in a casino. Sales growth is particularly evident when a retailer sells a winning Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot. 

That’s the reason lottery retailers frequently promote themselves as the spot where a significant winning lottery ticket was purchased. Lottery retailers gain advantages not just from bonuses for selling jackpots and large prizes, but also from heightened sales after wins, leading to more lucrative commissions.

"As for whether a lottery vendor can truly be “hot,” that thinking is only a fallacy, so says Dr. Mark Glickman of Harvard University. However, Glickman, a senior lecturer on statistics, says playing at a lottery retailer where a major win was recently sold “also doesn’t give you any disadvantages.”

The Mega Millions jackpot for tonight is $80 million. The Powerball jackpot for tomorrow is $234 million. It's a good guess that the Giant Eagle in Massillon is selling numerous tickets today and tomorrow.
